A Street Taxi Named Desiree “is a satirical play that parodies Tennessee Williams' A Streetcar Named Desire. It explores the idea of what if Jesus returned to contemporary South Africa via a taxi, squeezed into a backseat. What would He see? What stories would He hear? Through the lens of three actors who play multiple characters, the play unfolds in a series of sketches and scenarios that push this concept to its limits. Each scene delivers a chaotic journey through short lefts, after-robots, and hopes that the taxi driver has cold drink money. It takes the audience on a fast-paced ride through the drama of taxi life, exploring trials and tribulations with humor and unpredictability.
"A Street Taxi Named Desiree” uses the vehicle of a taxi to comment on contemporary South Africa, offering both humor and deep reflection on the challenges faced in the country. Lewe ke strata, arr'thulaneng ko renkeng. Tjovitjooo!
