About

Katanga, January 17 engages with the assassination of Patrice Lumumba and explores its aftermath in the Democratic Republic of Congo, especially his Pan African vision.

Written by Lesego Rampolokeng and Bobby Rodwell the play moves from the 1961 assassination of liberation leaders Patrice Lumumba, Joseph Okito and Maurice Mpolo, to the present day reality of child soldiers in the eastern DRC.

“As my father ran in 1961, when his father, Joseph Okito was assassinated, the children of the Congo are still running,” Joseph Okito.
Using English, KiSwahili, Lingala and French acclaimed South African and Congolese actors Billy Langa, Charly Azade, Khutjo Green and Michael Disanka weave the narrative through word and movement to tell the story of a critical moment in the history of the Congo, and the African continent as a whole.
