In a radiant telling of East meets West, set in the early 1860s, Anna Leonowens, a young Welsh widow, travels with her son to the kingdom of Siam (now Thailand) to become the governess and English tutor to the wives and many children of King Mongkut of Siam.
Anna enjoys her interactions with the children but struggles to come to any agreement with the king about his ideas for ushering Siam into the modern world.
